March Madness Preview

Tuesday, March 14, 2006

You don't have to take my advice, and honestly I probably wouldn't take basketball advice from something called the Tuesday Morning Quarterback, but I didn't do too shabbily last year (picking 6 of 8 Elite Eight teams and 3 of 4 in the Final Four) so you might want to give what I have to say a second look. With that, I give you the TMQB's Bracket Buster Preview.
Let's start off by getting one thing clear. Gonzaga has no shot whatsoever...none. This is not the team you remember from eight years ago that consistently played spoiler, bracket buster, perpetual pain in the ass to people's brackets every March, these guys have been overly visible thanks, in part, to their filthy mustachioed, greasy-haired, sweet shooting wonder Adam Morrison, but I guarantee no one is going to overlook these guys. They could only muster a 3 seed in the Oakland Region and have tough programs like Alabama, Indiana, UCLA & Xavier in their half of the bracket alone. Barring they get past the boys in purple from Ohio, I have serious doubts the Zags, and their average 74.0 points allowed per game, can cut it against UCLA in the Sweet 16, and definitely not against Kansas, Marquette or Memphis.
Scoring highly on this weeks Not-Making-Sense-O-Meter: Duke getting congratulated with the Number 1 overall seed and toughest road out of Atlanta; Uconn, who lost to Syracuse in the Second Round of the Big East, gets a cakewalk and probably won't face a real test until UNC in the Elite 8. In the Dukies bracket? Syracuse, LSU, GW, West Virginia, Cal & Texas...don't ever say there's a Duke bias, not with a bracket like this.
So the two hundred, thirty-seven dollar question is, "who do I like?" Well, GW had about as good an opening weekend as "Dave Chappelle's Block Party," and things aren't going to get any better if Pops Mensah-Bonsu isn't healthy by Thursday. I like Duke beating Texas to come out of Atlanta. UCLA has been playing great basketball, but the only west coast teams I respect less play college football. Kansas and Pitt are both streaky, so I like Memphis winning Oakland. I've already said no one in the DC bracket can touch Uconn and that leaves Minneapolis. Villanova is the wild card, if they come out firing on all cylinders they'll be tough to beat, but Ohio State and BC are good teams as well. Smart money's on the winner of the Villanova - BC game winning the region.
In other news, the Arizona Cardinals are doing everything in their power to make me look like a genius, signing Edgerrin James to a four year, 30 million dollar deal. The Colts will be looking to draft a running back on day one of the draft, like they did seven years ago after sending Marshall Faulk packing and drafting Edge ahead of Ricky "Puff-Puff, Give" Williams. Also trying their best to make me look smart are Baltimore and Washington. Redskins owner, Daniel Snyder is continuing his trend of throwing cash at any player with a pulse and Baltimore made sure they continue to be known as the scariest team in the NFL, re-signing former felon Jamal Lewis. Although, the Redskins now have a quarterback in Randal El, that can compete with Jason Campbell for the starting job.

Random Observations:
If I were on the selection committee, Gonzaga would've gotten a 5 seed. They played in a conference where the next highest winning percentage was .571...pathetic.
If Allan Ray doesn't come back 100% from the eye injury he suffered in the Semis of the Big East Tournament, it could be a very short Tournament for Villanova.
The only team to play an easier schedule than George Washington was Gonzaga, taking on such stalwart opponents as the Saginaw Michigan Kiwanis Club, Washington Generals and Phoenix Mercury.
Come to think of it, Memphis is streaky too. I suggest putting the Oakland bracket in your birdcage and letting Tweety pick for you.

Next Week:
Just to clarify, I'm taking Duke, Pitt, Uconn & BC.
It would be nice for Temple to send John Chaney off to retirement winning in the NIT, but I don't see it happening.
